The shuttle is pretty well cocooned once it arrives at the pad, as can been seen in the above photo. The last time I visited KSC (~1994) there was a shuttle on the pad but you could hardly see it. The only time it is really vulnerable to weather is during the roll out to the pad and just before launch when the RSS (Rotating Service Structure) is moved off to the side. They will roll it back into the VAB if there is a hurricane anywhere within a couple days of the Cape.

Sometimes what happened in Neverland came out in the deposition.
